Happy Horses: Habitats and Favorite Foods
Common Habitats:
Domesticated horses are found all over the world and thrive in open environments such as pastures, grasslands, and farmlands. In the wild, feral horses typically inhabit plains, prairies, deserts, and open woodlands—any area where they have space to roam and graze freely.
Preferred Foods:
Horses are herbivores with a diet mainly consisting of:
-
Grass
-
Hay or alfalfa (especially when pasture is limited)
-
Grains (like oats, corn, or barley—fed in moderation)
-
Fresh vegetables and fruits (carrots and apples are favorites!)
They also require constant access to clean, fresh water and may benefit from salt or mineral licks to supplement their diet.
