Down-to-Earth Donkeys: Where They Live and What They Eat

Common Habitats:
Donkeys are incredibly hardy animals that thrive in dry, open environments. In the wild, they’re often found in deserts, grasslands, and savannas, especially in parts of Africa and the Middle East. Domesticated donkeys live comfortably on farms, ranches, and pastures, where they have shelter, space to roam, and companions (they are very social animals!).

Preferred Foods:
Donkeys are herbivores with simple but specific dietary needs. Their ideal diet includes:

  • Grass and low-sugar hay (like barley or oat hay)

  • Straw (wheat straw is great for weight management)

  • Fresh vegetables (like carrots and turnips, in moderation)

  • Limited grain or commercial feeds (only when extra energy is needed)

Donkeys need fresh water at all times, and salt or mineral licks are often provided to supplement their diet. Their digestion is very efficient, so high-sugar foods should be avoided to prevent health issues like laminitis.
